Learner Profiles

This document sets out the different roles within the training course and defines the expectations on individuals participating in those roles. All participants are expected to contribute positively to the learning environment by fostering inclusivity, equal participation, and collaboration among all learners.

Facilitator

Guiding with Course Material

  • Facilitators should actively guide learners through the material, explaining concepts clearly and ensuring learners can understand and apply them effectively in practical scenarios.
  • The aim of the facilitator is to ensure that the team tackle every lesson in full in the time available for the course.

Acting as Product Owner (P.O.)

  • If no course participant is designated as the Product Owner, the facilitators will assume the P.O. role during the workshop.
  • You can find detailed Product Owner responsibilities here.

Fostering an Inclusive and Collaborative Learning Environment

  • Facilitators must create an environment where learners, both new and returning, feel encouraged to contribute and collaborate.
  • They must ensure less-vocal participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and engage in discussions.
  • They must ensure that all participants are contributing actively, and tasks are not all being completed by more dominant individuals.
  • New learners may need additional support to help them integrate comfortably into the workshop.

Promoting a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment

  • Facilitators should create an atmosphere where learners feel comfortable asking questions and sharing insights without fear of judgment.
  • They should facilitate open discussions in a way that remains constructive and on-topic and allow time for the lessons to be completed on schedule.

Scrum Master

  • The expectations of the scrum master are to:
    • Read and understand all the pre-reading, bringing any questions to the drop-in and discussion sessions where appropriate.
    • Ensure the Scrum process is followed accurately and consistently.
    • Facilitate key “ceremonies” such as sprint planning and the sprint retrospective.
    • Ensure tooling is being used properly and thoroughly by all scrum team members.
    • Evaluate the course and feedback any issues to the appropriate GitHub trackers (repo templates or the agile course repo).

Developer

  • The expectations of the developer are to:
    • Read and understand all the pre-reading, bringing questions to the drop-in and discussion sessions where appropriate.
    • Contribute actively to discussions and assist with the completion of the tasks in the course material.
    • Participate in all “ceremonies” as part of the scrum team.
    • Use tooling as explained, during the course.
    • Evaluate the course and feedback any issues to the appropriate GitHub trackers (repo templates or the agile course repo).

Product Owner

  • The expectations of the product owner are to:
    • Define and prioritise the product’s vision, backlog, and key deliverables.
    • Clarify any questions the development team may have regarding product functionality.
    • Use the Product Vision statement and P.O. Guide provided by the course organisers to understand the product and effectively play this role.
